This tutorial is intended for people who have been invited to collaborate or view documents stored in SharePoint or Microsoft Teams, and are NOT using an MCBC account (@mcbc.org.au)
You only need to follow the steps below once. After your account has already joined the MCBC organisation, any future invites to different sites or groups will be automatic and does not require any further action.
A similar tutorial in video form (for Microsoft Teams) can be found at https://youtu.be/4b5tCmStFhw
Instructions to accept an invitation for SharePoint are very similar - the list of groups you can access can be found at https://mcbcorgau.sharepoint.com/_layouts/15/sharepoint.aspx
Creating an account
You will have received an email notifying you that you have been added to a Microsoft 365 group
Click the ‘Go to SharePoint’ link to continue, or alternatively go to https://login.microsoftonline.com/?whr=mcbc.org.au
You will be asked to login with a Microsoft account (@outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com etc).
If you do not already have one, you will be asked to create one.
If you already have an account, skip to the ‘Accepting the invitation’ section.
If you already have a Microsoft account but you were invited using a different email address, you can ask the person who invited you to send an invite to your Microsoft email instead.
On the next page, choose a password you would like to use for your account
On the next page, you will be asked to verify your email by typing in a code that is sent to your email address.
Go back to your email and type the code in.
You may wish to unsubscribe from Microsoft marketing communications by unchecking the box.
Accepting the invitation
Once your account has been created, you will be redirected to accept the invitation from the Melbourne Chinese Baptist Church organisation. Click ‘Accept’ and allow a few seconds for the process to complete.
Once the invitation has been accepted, you will be asked to setup multi-factor authentication. Click ‘Next’
You will be asked to setup MFA through a mobile app
A similar tutorial in video form for setting up multi-factor authentication can be found at https://youtu.be/Q8OzabuNwHI
There are 2 options for setting up MFA through a mobile app:
- Receive notifications asking you to approve a login (one click)
- Type in a verification code when you login that is generated through the app
If you choose to receive approval notifications, you will need to download Microsoft Authenticator. The verification code option does not require MS Authenticator and is the more suitable option if you do not want to download an extra MFA app – you can add it directly into Authy, Google Authenticator etc.
Click on the option you prefer and follow the instructions on screen.
We recommend using ‘Receive notifications for verification’ with Microsoft Authenticator as this is the easiest and most straightforward option.
For users who opt for the verification code option and would like to use an app other than Microsoft Authenticator, you will need to click “Configure app without notifications” to get a QR code that can be scanned by another TOTP app
Either approve a trial authentication request or type in the verification code as displayed in the app to confirm your MFA method is working.
Click ‘Finished’ once done to continue authentication.
After MFA has been configured, you will need to use the method you have configured to login in addition to your username and password.
Once these steps have all been completed, go back to the original invite email and click on the same link - ‘Go to SharePoint’
For Microsoft Teams groups, go to https://teams.microsoft.com or download the Microsoft Teams application on your device.
For SharePoint sites, you may wish to bookmark the page for future use.
You should now be able to access the SharePoint site or Microsoft Teams group.
