Enrolling in multi-factor authentication

Baptist Insurance Services, the insurer of the church which provides cyber protection insurance amongst other coverage, mandates the use of multi-factor authentication for all accounts that are used for church purposes. A detailed list of these requirements can be found on the Baptist Insurance website.

This is a guide on how to setup MFA for your Microsoft 365 account, which can be used to access a range of online services that the church provides.

A similar tutorial in video form can be found at https://youtu.be/Q8OzabuNwHI

  1. Login to the Office 365 portal https://login.microsoftonline.com/?whr=mcbc.org.au

  2. You will be told that more information is required to keep your account secure, click ‘Next’

  3. You will be asked to setup MFA through a mobile app

There are 2 options for setting up MFA through a mobile app:
    - Receive notifications asking you to approve a login (one click)
    - Type in a verification code when you login that is generated through the app

If you choose to receive approval notifications, you will need to download Microsoft Authenticator. The verification code option does not require MS Authenticator and is the more suitable option if you do not want to download an extra MFA app – you can add it directly into Authy, Google Authenticator etc.
Click on the option you prefer and follow the instructions on screen.

For users who opt for the verification code option and would like to use an app other than Microsoft Authenticator, you will need to click “Configure app without notifications” to get a QR code that can be scanned by another TOTP app

  4. Either approve a trial authentication request or type in the verification code as displayed in the app to confirm your MFA method is working.
  5. Click ‘Finished’ once done to continue authentication.

After MFA has been configured, you will need to use the method you have configured to login in addition to your username and password.
